Below is a mass email sent to members of Dying With Dignity to encourage them to contact their MPs to support draft legislation on decriminalizing medical aid in dying. Many members wrote letters which were posted on our website to serve as examples to others.

Let’s make 2013 the best year ever for end-of-life choice!

Breaking News from Parliament Hill!

Today, the Honourable Steven Fletcher (MP Winnipeg), tabled two private members’ bills to amend the Criminal Code of Canada:

Bill C-581 regarding physician assisted death, and
Bill C-582 to establish the Canadian Commission on
Physician Assisted Death.

The bills were seconded by Manon Perreault (MP Montcalm). You can read the legislation and find out more about how the legislation has evolved by visiting our website.

Wanda Morris, DWD’s Executive Director, accompanied the MPs at a media conference today on Parliament Hill where she made a statement and answered questions from members of the media.

This is yet another clear signal that end-of-life choice is an issue whose time has come. We ask all members and supporters of Dying With Dignity to contact their federal Members of Parliament to express support for end-of-life choice. Public support is crucial to ensuring our MPs know this is a matter of urgent concern to Canadians. Use your postal code to find contact information for your MP here.

Help support the fight for the right of Canadians at end-of-life to avoid unnecessary suffering.  Please join or donate to Dying With Dignity today.

The mass email below successfully encouraged members of Dying With Dignity to attend the CMA Town Hall meetings to ensure the position of the organization was heard. Many of our members made public speeches, which were included in the final CMA report on the public consultation.

An Update for Members and Supporters of
Dying With Dignity Canada

Please note that several links were disabled on the Maclean’s website since our previous update. New registration links have just been released for the

Town Halls to Discuss End-of-Life Care
Sponsored by the Canadian Medical Association

The Town Halls are being held by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) in partnership with Maclean’s Magazine and in association with the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians and the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.

Maclean’s launched its brand new website yesterday, and as you might expect with such a monumental task, a couple bits and pieces didn’t make it onto the new website as expected (pieces like the St. John’s event). Maclean’s assures us that they are working to have that information restored soon on a special page they are building just for the town halls.

Many of you have contacted me about why there are not more cities on the tour. The CMA has informed us that their budget restricts the number of cities they can visit, but invite everyone to participate online. If you cannot attend a town hall in person, you can still get involved by accessing the live stream. Currently, the Vancouver details are posted – please note that the live stream details for your city may not be active until just before the event.

Live streaming allows viewers across Canada to pose questions and offer comments. I hope you’ll attend either in person or online and provide your comments in support of Dying With Dignity. The CMA will take all of the online comments into account in the final report. You do not need to register for the live stream.

If you plan to attend in person, please register for the Town Hall of your choice using one of the new links below:
